Installation Rules

This course prepares the learner for the National Examination (Paper 1 & 2) at the FET College. All Legal aspects (OSHAct), Rules and Regulations (SANS10142-1), previous exam papers and relevant codes are covered.

Gain understanding of the:-

  • OSHACT
  • Electrical Installation Regulations (2009)
  • Electrical Machinery Regulations (2011)
  • SANS 10142-1

Learn to:

  • Use SANS 10142-1 as an installation guide.
  • Determine earth continuity conductor size.
  • Use tables to determine current carrying capacity of cables.
  • Calculate voltage drop of circuits.
  • Determine minimum cable size to be used for a circuit.
  • Determine maximum number of conductors in a conduit.
  • Determine the Loop Impedance and Prospective short circuit current at the point of installation.

Electrical Trade Test Preparation

This course prepares the learner for the National Trade Test Examination at Department of Higher Education and Training (previously Department of Labour), INDLELA (Olifantsfontein). This qualification is also known as a “Red Seal” qualification.

Learn to:-

  • Install a conduit system and wire a domestic installation
  • Wire various motor starters
  • Perform testing on motors
  • Do fault-finding on various motor starters

Mathematics N3

This course covers the syllabi as prescribed by Department of Higher Education and Training. It is one of the subjects that are required when registering as an Installation Electrician (Wireman’s License) at Department of Labour.

Topics covered include Exponents and Logarithms, Factors, Equations, Word Problems & Manipulation, Algebraic Graphs, Co-ordinate Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus.

All books, additional study material and some past exam papers will be provided.

Renkalec Training Centre will enrol the learner at a FET college for the national examination of this subject.

Electro-technology N3

This course covers the syllabi as prescribed by Department of Higher Education and Training. It is one of the subjects that are required when registering as an Installation Electrician (Wireman’s License) at Department of Labour.

Topics covered include DC Machines (Generators, Motors and Efficiency), AC Theory (RLC Circuits etc), Transformers, Electronics and Measuring Instruments.

All books, additional study material and some past exam papers will be provided.

Engineering Science N3

This course covers the syllabi as prescribed by Department of Higher Education and Training. It is one of the subjects that are required when registering as an Installation Electrician (Wireman’s License) at Department of Labour.

Topics covered include Movement, Moment, Forces, Friction, Heat, Chemistry, Electricity and Hydraulics.

All books, additional study material and some past exam papers will be provided.

Programmable Logic Controllers

Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s)

This course is presented in collaboration with NGTS Training Centre and the qualification is assessed against National Unit Standards, listed under the auspices of MERSETA, with QCTO.

The course introduces the learner to the field of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Control Systems Technology (CST).

This training has a theoretical and practical component (control panel simulation using the Siemens PLC S7-200).

Learn to:

  • Configure the Hardware.
  • Install the Software (STEP 7 Micro/Win for Beginners).
  • Start STEP 7.
  • Use the help system.
  • Connect and configure the communication cable.
  • Preform the first function test.
  • Perform the first Programming exercise. (a) Writing the program; (b) Opening the program exercise; (c) Downloading the program; (d) Function and test of the exercise program; (e) Elements of the Ladder logic, function Blocks Diagram and Statement list; (f) Transforming a circuit diagram; (g) Status view(ONLINE); (h) Statements.

Progammable Logic Controllers (PLC’s)-Intermediate

This course is presented in collaboration with NGTS Training Centre and the qualification is assessed against National Unit Standards, listed under the auspices of MERSETA, with QCTO.

This course expands the concepts learned in the Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers course. It discusses detailed programming principles and techniques of Programmable Logic Controllers (Programming 1) and explains the concepts of Control Systems Technology (CST).

The training has a theoretical and practical component (control panel simulation using the Siemens PLC S7-300 CPU).

Learn to:

  • Assemble and install the Hardware(S7-300 CPU).
  • Install and start STEP 7 300 CPU with the aid of the help system.
  • Connect the communication cable (MPI).
  • Configure the S7-300 Communication.
  • Preform the function test.
  • Preform Intermediate Programming exercise: (a) Digital operation, (b) Binary operation, (c) Functions and Function Blocks, (d) Organization Blocks, (e) Analog Value Processing.

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) -Advanced

This course is presented in collaboration with NGTS Training Centre and the qualification is assessed against National Unit Standards, listed under the auspices of MERSETA, with QCTO.

The course expands the concepts learned in the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) – Intermediate course. It expands on the concepts studied before and deals with advanced features such as described below.

The training has a theoretical and practical component (control panel with analogue processing simulation using the Siemens S7-300 CPU).

Topics covered:

Hardware Configuration is important before any programming takes place.

Advanced Programming exercise:

  • Statement List Programming
  • Accumulator Functions
  • Distributed inputs and outputs and Parameter Assignment
  • Block calls and multiple instances
  • Indirect addressing
  • Instruction with REAL numbers
  • Instruction with REAL numbers
  • Analogs Processing

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s)-Maintenance and Troubleshooting

This course is presented in collaboration with NGTS Training Centre and the qualification is assessed against National Unit Standards, listed under the auspices of MERSETA, with QCTO.

The course teaches the learner to perform maintenance and troubleshooting functions on Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) It expands the concepts learned in the Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers , Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) – Intermediate and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) – Advanced courses.

The training has a theoretical and practical component (Live panel programming and troubleshooting on the S7-200 and S7-300 CPU’s). This means that the learner will receive a lecture conducted by an expert facilitator.

Learn to:

*Note: Hardware Configuration is important before any programming takes place.

Perform advanced Programming and troubleshooting exercise on:

  • S7-200 and S7-300.
  • S71200 on prior arrangements.

Human Machine Interfaces (HMI’s)

This course is presented in collaboration with NGTS Training Centre and the qualification is assessed against National Unit Standards, listed under the auspices of MERSETA, with QCTO.

The course covers the field of Human Machine Interfacing (HMI), communicating with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).

The training expands the concepts learned in the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) – Intermediate course. It expands on the concepts studied before and deals with advanced features such as described below.

The training has a theoretical and practical component (Siemens HMI Panels communicating with S7-300 and S7-1200 TIA Portal CPU).

Learn to:

*Note: Hardware Configuration is important before any programming takes place.

Perform a Touch Panel Programming exercise in terms of:

  • Tags programming (Plant stop and starts, analogs-Set points(SP) Process Variables(PV) Output Variables(MV).
  • Level, Pressure and Temperature Transmitter’s Values displaying.
